Sun Protection Tips

No one would like to have dark spots causing from sun exposure so there are series of sunscreens at the market. The Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun also changes your DNA, creates damage and aging on your skin, or even brings skin cancer.

Know more about UVA / UVB

Ultraviolet (UV), which passes through the atmosphere, contains A-wave (UVA) and B-wave (UVB). A-wave can hit the dermis of the skin, destroying collagen and elastic tissue. Cells that darken the skin can be found in the dermis, so UVA is also the main cause of darker skin.

Some people think that tanned skin is a symbol of health, but the fact is, the DNA is damaged and there is a chance of causing cancer in some adverse cases. PA rating means protection grade of UVA rays. For example, PA+ is the weakest in protection from UVA and PA+++ is the strongest. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only allows Zinc oxide to be the only active ingredient that provides complete UVA (and UVB) protection.

UVB has shorter wave and therefore only hits the epidermis. If the skin is exposed to the sun for a long time, you will be sunburned or even develop blisters; skin cancer will be developed in case of prolonged period of time with unprotected exposure. The SPF (sun protection factor) we see on sunscreen products is an indicator of UVB resistance. The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) scale is not linear. SPF 10 has provided 10 times sun protection and is effective against 90% UVB. The US Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that many sunscreen products claiming their products having SPF50 but turn out they only have around SPF15. We have to be careful in selecting the right products.

Sun Protection Factor

SPF –> UVB Protection
10 –> 90%
15 –> 93%
20 –> 95%
30 –> 97%
50 –> 98%
100 –> 99%

Know more about sunscreens

The sunscreen products on the market can be roughly divided into two categories: Chemical sunscreen and Minerals (Physical) sunscreen. Chemical sunscreen products typically include a combination of 2-6 active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.

Studies have shown that these active ingredients not only cause skin irritation, but also affect the body’s hormones, contribute to other health problems and even cancer! So why is chemical sunscreen still the choice of most people? Because these products are easy to apply, less sticky and do not appear to have some white color on the skin after use, they are very popular.

Common physical sunscreen ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are effective against UVA and UVB. But another worry is that most of the physical sunscreen ingredients are also nanoparticles, which can easily enter blood vessels and various organs of the body. More and more scientists have pointed out that nanoparticles are not necessarily safe for the health of the body, and may even destroy DNA.

Natural sunscreen

The most effective way to protect yourself from sun exposure is to wear long-sleeved clothes and trousers, sunglasses with UVA + UVB and sun hats (or umbrellas), and avoid prolonged outdoor activities on days with strong UV rays. In case you go to the beach or do water activities, you should use physical sunscreen products without-nanoparticles, and apply every two hours. Cover your skin with a towel (preferably with UVA + UVB protection) or put on your clothes when you are no longer in the water sports. Don’t forget to use some cooling and skin care products after the activity, such as aloe vera adding with Lavender, Helichrysum and Black Spruce essential oil.
