BHBL enewsletter 2020.08 — Prevention Program for Pneumonia (電子月刊英文版)

Prevention Program for Pneumonia

The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission has recommended some measures in the times of pneumonia back in February 2020. It is called Home Prevention Program for Pneumonia Caused by New Coronavirus Infection with Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Here is some extracts from the article:

According to the concept of “preventing disease” in traditional Chinese medicine, the New Coronavirus Infection Pneumonia Expert Group of Traditional Chinese Medicine has studied and formulated the “Wuhan New Coronavirus Infection Pneumonia – Chinese Medicine Home Prevention Program” for the reference of the general public.

The recommendation includes three aspects: Herbal/Chinese Medicine, Aromatherapy, and moderate exercise. It aims to enhance the people’s physical fitness, enhance the body’s immunity, and effectively prevent the spread of disease.

I.     Herbal/Chinese Medicine.

II.    Aromatherapy.

III.   Moderate exercise.

The article shows that the Commission suggested Aromatherapy to prevent epidemics, which the “中藥香包Chinese medicine sachet /清涼油 Refreshing Oil” mentioned in the article has mainly 4 kinds of ingredients as follows:

I.      Menthol (Class: Phenolic Alcohol)

It can be extracted from Peppermint Mentha piperita essential oil. There is 33-44% menthol in peppermint oil.

II.     Salicylic acid (Class – Carboxylic Acid)

It can be extracted from Wintergreen essential oil– Please bear in mind we should choose Gaultheria procumbens, instead of Gaultheria fragrantissima.

III.    Camphor (Class – Ketone)

It can be extracted from Juniper Juniperus communis (10-18%), Sage Salvia officinalis (4-24%), Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis [1] Chemo type: cineole (6-30%), [2] Chemo type: ribenol (5-15%), Blue Tansy Tanacetum annuum (10-17%), Coriander Coriandrum sativum (3-6%)

IV.    Eugenol (Class – Phenol)

It can be extracted from Clove Syzygium aromaticum, which is highly antioxidant (78%), Cinnamon Cinnamomum verum (20-30%), Basil Ocimum basilicum (2-10%), Laurus Nobilis Laurus nobilis (3-9%) , Rose Rosa damascena (1-2%), Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata (0-2%)

*There can be more than 300 chemical properties in a plant, more than 1% is already significant and good enough.

Dr. David Stewart, author of The Chemistry of Essential Oils, explained a lot of reasons and evidence in the views from French style aromatherapy, as long as the essential oils are 100% pure and natural, they are safe to use.

[Warning – Be smart to choose the best type of essential oil, that is those 100% pure and 100% no chemical added.]

There are essential oils with mixture of lab-made properties selling in the market. They may have the same chemical formula with the natural ones but actually they are with different chemical structure isomers, that result in different outcome.

Example 1: Peppermint

L-menthol and D-menthol appears in some Peppermint essential oil. However, oil with L-menthol is natural where D-menthol is synthetic/lab-made. The market is selling mixture of both and result in different outcome. Remember, our body should all use natural ingredients and we are born to metabolize natural ingredients.

According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, it is believed only 2% of essential oils sold in the market is 100% pure and natural. As matter of fact, most of the market research is done according to most of the oils in the market, implying those reports by majority are according to those not pure and natural ones.

Example 2: Wintergreen

We should use Gaultheria procumbens, that is not easily found in the market. On the contrary, we can commonly buy Gaultheria fragrantissima. It has very high concentration that may contribute to medical burn. It is toxic for oral use, in case of high dosage.

In short, your choice on essential oils is very critical.

According to Dr. David Stewart, we should well use the gift from the mother nature. We need to be knowledgeable in the usage and should have no panic. Let’s be peace at mind, be happy, be prepared with precaution, drink plenty of water, have enough sleep and avoid going to crowded places. We do not need to be panic but should always be careful.
